"And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
K’naan is a talented Somali-Canadian poet and rapper. His family left war-torn Mogadishu in 2001, on the last plane out of the country. Since then he’s mastered English, in part by copying the diction and style of his favorite rap artists.
This song captures the wisdom of having survived war, and how carrying the experience forward effects his life. It reflects especially of a painful incidence of watching his mother physically recover from the war’s violence.
If you go to his concerts, there’s definitly a strong hip-hop presence and energy. K’naan takes the experience beyond that though, by not skimping on his philosophy. His approach encourages the message of music to sink into the soul.
