"And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
Maja was 16 when her life forever changed in Mostar, Yugoslavia (now Bosnia i Herzegovina), at the onset of the Bosnian war. Mortar struck the school courtyard where she was sitting with 6 of her friends, and they were all killed. Both of Maja’s legs and her arm were severely injured, and her left leg had to be amputated below the knee. There were no anesthetics.
After staying in a make-shift hospital for 3 weeks fighting infections, Maja was evacuated to the US, where she received full treatment and many operations. She was able to graduate from high school in Cumberland, Maryland, and later earned a BA in Psychology in Pennsylvania. Her family, who had stayed in Bosnia to recover from her father’s injuries in another shelling, joined her in the States. She soon zipped off to Clearwater, FL, to take a job in an insurance company.
In Clearwater, she met Winter the dolphin. Winter lost his tail in a crab trap and was just getting fitted for a prosthetic tail…
What happened next would change both of their lives.
